LOUVERS AND METAL BUILDINGS: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW!

Your metal building is designed to accommodate a host of features and upgrades that enhance its year-round function. Many of these, like gutters and downspouts, are essential for draining water away from the building to prevent moisture build-up in and around the structural components and foundation. Others, like louvered vents and windows, help to facilitate air flow through interior metal building structures, providing further protection from moisture damage as well as improving interior air quality and comfort.

LEVERAGE THE BENEFITS OF LOUVERED ACCESSORIES ON YOUR METAL BUILDINGS
Louvers can be used in roofs, attic spaces, walls and windows. They are sections of angled slats that allow air - and light - to flow through, while protecting the building from moisture or other debris infiltration. Louvers are often used as part of a roof ventilation system, but they are also available for use on walls and above windows as well. As such, they come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors - allowing them to be an attractive feature on your metal building's exterior.

Here are some of the features offered by the addition of louvers.

Adequate ventilation. All buildings need ventilation. A fresh air source serves several functions. It supplies fresh air to your HVAC system, improving overall function and indoor air quality (more on that later). It can also help to keep things cooler during the warm months, reducing the amount of time your cooling system operates, which saves electricity. Equally important, adequate ventilation helps to mitigate moisture accumulation, which reduces condensation. This is a very important feature because moisture is a steel and metal building's worst enemy. Keeping those metal components from rusting and corroding means decades more enjoyment and far fewer maintenance, repair and replacement costs.

Improved indoor air quality. Indoor air quality is an increasing focus in construction. Previously, we thought of the air outside as the polluted version, while interior air felt "safe." Studies now show that interior air is often much more laden with concentrated levels of harmful chemicals, pollutants, particulate matter and allergens than the air outside. As a result, builders are focusing more on improving interior air quality, which in turn prevents allergies and other respiratory ailments. Louvers work to circulate air, giving toxins a way to exit the building, and allowing fresh air in. The aforementioned moisture control also acts to combat mold, which will take up residence on organic interior surfaces when moisture levels remain too high.

Add ventilation where a window isn't possible. Louvers are a smart way to add exterior wall ventilation in areas of the building where a window isn't feasible or desired. Ideally, louvers will be placed on opposite sides of the wall to take advantage of cross ventilation. However, even a single louver will yield noticeable air flow and ventilation.

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN REGARDS TO LOUVERS AND METAL BUILDINGS
To gain the maximum benefit of your metal building louvers, there are several things to consider. Working with a professional metal building manufacturer is the best way to ensure the louvers will function to their best advantage.

Size and quantity. The size and quantity of your louvers depends on the size and layout of the building. Rule of thumb calculations tell us that a single 10' ridge ventilator will serve 2400 square feet of space. However, that calculation means nothing once you introduce people, livestock or vented equipment into the equation. Your metal building engineer will be better able to calculate the right quantity, size and location of louvered vents based on your building's needs.
Airflow capacity. The best louvers are those that maximize ideal airflow capacity while minimizing the amount of weather or debris that can infiltrate the interior building space. Adjustable louvers, either mechanized or with a crank handle, can provide optimal flexibility and allow building owners complete control in severe wind or storm scenarios.
Aesthetics. Rather than being an eyesore, louvered vents are now offered in such a wide range of shapes, styles and colors that some buildings even incorporate "mock" louvers as part of their facade. It is worthwhile to invest in the highest-quality louvers you can afford to ensure their long-term function. Aluminum louvers are a safe bet; they're affordable, attractive, durable and offered in a wide range of stylish designs.
Safety. Often, louvers offer a way of gaining airflow and light in areas where window may not be the safest option. They are often used in bathrooms, on home fronts that face busy streets or for commercial buildings located in industrial parks. Placing the louvered vents high on the wall, above doorways, fixed windows and/or along the roofline can provide ample light and forms a natural thermal chimney.
